Download NetHack 3.4.2 for Windows 95/98/NT/2000/Me/XP

• Step 1: download.

  Click on the below to start the download system. Depending on your browser you may need to right-click so that the file is saved to disk and not displayed.

  Contains two executables - an Intel Win32 tty console executable and an Intel Win32 Graphical Interface executable. This may be used on Intel machines running Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.
  

  Some people have attempted to run the game from inside an unzip utility - this will not work. You must extract the contents of the .zip file to a new folder and run the game from that folder.

  Do not copy the game to your desktop; create a shortcut instead.

  
  
  
   
  

• Step 2: unpack.

  These files can be unpacked with any standard unzipping utility, which should be used when you have set your current directory to the location where you want to place NetHack.

• Step 3: edit.

  Edit defaults.nh to adjust your settings preferences.

  If you are using a non-U.S. keyboard arrangment, you may want adjust your keyboard handling using the "altkeyhandler" and/or "subkeyvalue" config file options. See the Guidebook for more information.

• Step 4: run.

  nethack.exe

  for the tty interface

  nethackw.exe

  for the graphical interface

  Save and bone files are compatible between these two executables.

  Refer to the file README within the zip file for further installation instructions and release notes.

  If the game halts with one of these messages:

      Common control library is missing.
      Common control library is outdated.
  

  then you need to apply the Common Control Library patch.

• Step 5: OPTIONAL: download large tiles.

  Click on the below to start the download system. Depending on your browser you may need to right-click so that the file is saved to disk and not displayed.

  tiles32.zip   (.2M bytes)   (MD5 sum: d5ceffd0f1cfe72899b2e026b79d2562)
  A set of 32 x 32 tiles (that is, larger than the default graphics set). To install it, unzip the contents into the same directory as nethackw.exe, and add the following line to your defaults.nh:
